Auditi vs Nextcloud

Nextcloud stores files. An audit needs every file tied to a request

Nextcloud is a capable platform for securely storing files, but it wasn't purpose-built to run the client-facing side of an audit. Auditi brings file requests, confirmations, communication and project management into one secure workspace built specifically for audit firms and their clients.

The difference

Built for audit teams, not adapted for them

For secure file exchange, general purpose platforms are a strong choice. Judged as the workspace where you and your audit clients collaborate, the gaps start to show. The question isn't just whether your files are secure. It's whether it can handle the full workflow of a client engagement during an audit.

  • Not built for a client engagement

These platforms were built for a range of industries. Audit engagements need structured PBC requests with owners, deadlines, and oversight that both sides can see and act on.

  • No workflow for audit confirmations

Audit teams need to send, track, match and document confirmation responses from banks and other third parties. A shared folder gives you somewhere to file the replies, not a way to run the process.

  • Ongoing IT maintenance

Building on top of a general purpose tool becomes an ongoing IT project which costs internal resources. If you self-host, your IT team becomes responsible for maintenance, admin and server security too.

The problem

You have to fill the workflow gaps

Without a dedicated workflow, your options are custom development or bolting on other tools. Typically this means PBC requests go out ad hoc. Files land in a folder, questions sit in emails or file comments, and the PBC list holding it all together lives in a spreadsheet. Multiply that across every engagement and it's a season's worth of admin.

Your clients' experience becomes your firm's reputation

  • No clear overview of your engagements

Status lives in a spreadsheet, files live in a folder, and answering "where are we?" means reconciling both.

  • A frustrating client experience

Clients upload into a folder with no sense of what's been accepted, what's outstanding or what's next.

  • The audit takes far longer

Every reconciliation, repeated request, extra email and unanswered question adds days and extra cost to the engagement.

Questions

Common questions about Auditi and Nextcloud

How much does Auditi cost compared to Nextcloud?

Auditi starts at $29 per firm user per month. Nextcloud is open source and can be self-hosted for free in some circumstances, but enterprise pricing starts at €71.29 per user per year with a 100-user minimum (checked on Nextcloud pricing on 25 August 2026).

The licence fee is rarely the whole cost. If you self-host then there may be IT costs for managing a server. Extending the platform's functionality also means paying a developer. Both are ongoing.

The largest cost is usually the least visible. It's the auditor time lost on engagements that run long because evidence was slow to arrive.

How secure is Auditi?

Auditi runs on ISO 27001-certified infrastructure, hosted in Germany with DATEV or in the United States on Microsoft Azure, with real-time threat monitoring and enterprise-grade firewalls. Redundant systems and automated backups support 99.99% uptime. Access is protected by SSO, two-factor authentication and detailed audit logs. Your firm retains full ownership of all client data, encrypted in transit and at rest. Auditi is trusted by 500+ audit firms, including Baker Tilly, RSM and Crowe.
